Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in America, is a rapper and actress. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and singer. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita, a instructor in Irvington High School. Latifahs parents split up when Latifah was 10 years old. was ten years old. Latifah was born and was raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. The number she sang was"Home" from the musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah was a beatboxer in her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is one of the founding members of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and was signed by Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first track Wrath of My Madness.
